One Thousand Cranes

One of my Plurk friends was talking about Sadako Sasaki recently, and re-reading her story made me want to do a small post about her and the story of 1000 cranes. Sadako’s story is a touching one, she was a victim of war but held a hope for peace in her heart, and since her death on October 25, 1955, people have told her story to inspire a hope for peace in others. I fold origami, I have for many many years now and once attempted the Thousand Cranes myself, but sadly did not quite finish.
Here are some instructions if you’d like to try your own. This is a very basic origami fold, and one of the very first a novice would learn. The instructions actually have a quote from Sadako-chan on the bottom: “I will write ‘peace’ on your wings, and you will fly all over the world.” One thing we could use a lot of at this time, so this is my hope for peace and hope that children like Sadako will someday not have to suffer because of war.
